The family of the camper who died after being struck by a tree branch at Camp Chickami on Aug. 18 has identified him as Mason Sundberg of Sudbury.
The family, who released a statement through the Sudbury Police Department, said Mason, 8, was “the perfect son” who was “funny, goofy and crazy in all the right ways.”
Mason and a camp counselor, who sustained injuries but has since been released from Newton-Wellesley Hospital, were struck around 10:40 a.m. The camp nurse administered first aid until emergency responders — including Wayland Police and Fire departments — arrived on scene. Mason was taken by MedFlight to Massachusetts General Hospital.
“I want to offer our sincere thoughts and support to the family and friends who are facing this tragic loss,” said Wayland Acting Police Chief Mark Hebert in a statement released on Aug. 19.
The statement released by Mason’s family went on to say his memory will be held closely by everyone who was lucky to cross paths with him. “He may be gone, but his soul lives on in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew him.”
Wayland Fire Chief Neil McPherson urged anyone who has been affected by the tragedy to seek out friends, family or professional help.
“Our Wayland community is grieving today, and thinking of those who lost so much as a result of this tragic accident,” said McPherson. “I encourage anyone who is experiencing overwhelming grief or anxiety to talk to someone, reach out for help, and to remember that we are the strongest when we stand together as a community.”
The family thanked the community for their support and condolences. They also said details on memorial services would be shared when they are finalized.
Camp Chickami on Boston Post Road is a day camp for kids entering grades 1-9. It is run by the West Suburban YMCA.

Mason left us yesterday, but his kindness, love and smile never will. A fiercely loyal, loving, and empathetic friend to old friends and new. A perfect son, grandson, nephew, and cousin — he loved his family more than anything (and his dog River). Mason was funny, goofy and crazy in all the right ways; he will be remembered for singing and dancing around the house with a wide smile on his face and a skip in his step. Mason loved video games, good sushi, swimming, skiing, running everywhere, and a good holiday celebration with over the top decorations. He loved to draw and build stories with his friends, a notebook in his bag everywhere he went. His brightness will be missed, but never forgotten by those who loved him.
He may be gone, but his soul lives on in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew him. Information about remembrances and celebration of life will be shared soon.
