Municipal Meeting Recaps

Finance Committee

On Aug. 17, the Finance Committee leaned against a fiscal 2028 override, pushes for multi-year strategic plan. Meeting jointly with the Select Board and Finance Director Brian Keveny on Aug. 17, the committee reconvened tentatively signaling they may recommend closing the fiscal 2028 gap without an override if pending numbers on pensions, state aid and health insurance break favorably.

Member Brian O’Herlihy said a draft actuarial report suggests the retirement assessment could drop from about $1.1 million to $700,000, and warned that roughly 100 basis points of the projected 6.8% tax increase reflects debt deferred from last year. He estimated the average Wayland tax bill, just under $20,000 today, could approach $25,000 within three years. The committee flagged a $2 million high school septic project now flowing through the capital stabilization fund.
