Wayland Historic District Commission conditions Bow Road window replacement on exterior muntins. The commission voted 5-0 Tuesday to approve a Renewal by Andersen replacement window project at 34 Bow Road, owned by Neil and Donna Olmsted, with the requirement that applied muntins be added to the exterior of any window visible from the public way, covering three second-floor front windows and four driveway-side windows. Design consultant Steve Bowler had proposed interior-only wood grills using the company’s Fibrex composite, described as 40% wood and 60% thermal polymers, but Chair Greg Dale, Vice Chair Margery F. Baston and member Desmond McAuley pressed for exterior detail to preserve the shadow line of a divided-light window. McAuley said exterior muntins should “read to dimension, read to shadow, that don’t give us a blank glazed shimmer.” Bowler agreed to relay the requirement to the homeowners, who hope to install before winter.
